Price Of A Degree

As the UK new university top-up fees come into force - as an additional burden after the introduction of tuition charges - the question is whether the cost of higher education and gaining a degree is worth running up debts.... Why do I ask this? I was just watching a documentary whereby, by the end of the decade Tony Blair wants half of school leavers to go to university.
However, rising tuition fees and living costs means that many students graduate with a five figure debt!!!

Is the price of a degree worth paying?

It used to be that if you were a university graduate, you were guaranteed a good job with a good salary - compared to those who didnt. However, as the number of university graduate increases, the demand for these highly qualified persons are declining, and the gap in salary between graduates and non-graduates are decreasing. Why is this so? The reason is because there are now other routes to get where you want to get to (e.g. you can do vocational courses, BTECs, dipolmas...) and an increased competition for the same job.

Graduates in UK now find that even though they have a degree - they are finding it more difficult to find jobs in the field that they studied in... I mean, look at Jamie Oliver - he was working at the age of 8 at his parents' pub restaurant and did not graduate from uni... his personal fortune is estimated to be more than £20 million... Other examples include Stella McCartney with a personal fortune of £15 million and listen to this... Retail tycoon Philip Green was named Britain's richest man after amassing a personal fortune worth £3.3bn.
The 52-year-old Arcadia and Bhs boss became the first "commoner" to hold the title of wealthiest Briton!!

Well, DnA have very different backgrounds and we both have different qualities and knowledge... I do believe, getting a degree opens the doors to many opportunities that may not be present to non-graduates. However, these days, getting a degree doesnt necessarily determine that you will be highly paid nor does it determine that you are intelligent!!! Sometimes, getting a degree may "inhibit" your potential, as you are fed information and "taught" how to do things, whereas those who are able to experiment and learn as they go along may develop themselves and then excel...

So, whatever your choice may be or have been - there is no right or wrong answer... The point is do not regret that choice and work to the future...
